U - Shaped Functions : Artifact or Hallmark of Development ?

چکیده
Article: The articles in this collection consider one very interesting puzzle of development: U-shaped developmental functions. At some point during development, an organism might exhibit what seems like a regression from its expected developmental trajectory and, according to continuity models of development, this is aberrant. In this special issue, apparent regressions in behavior across a wide range of developmental phenomena are discussed. Gershkoff-Stowe and Thelen (this issue) present evidence that infants will reach correctly on B trials before they reach perseveratively, and that young children's naming errors actually increase with age before achieving a period of stability. Namy, Campbell. and Tomasello (this issue) show that even though 26-month-olds have difficulty with arbitrary gestures, younger and older children do not. Finally, Cashon and Cohen (this issue) show that the ability to integrate facial features follows a U-shaped developmental pattern for inverted faces. but oddly enough. an N-shaped pattern for upright faces. These counter-intuitive findings, and many others like them, seem to call for revisions to the common theoretical conception of development as a monotonically increasing. ever-improving process. In line with the contributors, our main thesis is that regressions in the developmental trajectory of particular behavioral traits are, if anything. the quintessential hallmark of the developmental process rather than mere artifacts of development.

U-Shaped Development: An Old but Unsolved Problem
Even today the investigation of U-shaped functions in human development is of considerable importance for different domains of Developmental Psychology. More and more scientific researchers focus their efforts on the challenge to describe and explain the phenomenon by identifying those skills and abilities being affected. The impact of U-shaped functions on diagnostic decision-making and on the...
متن کاملThe Effects of Economic, Financial and Political Developments on Iran’s CO2 Emissions
This study examines dynamic interrelationships and causality relationships among CO2 emissions, economic, political and financial variables over the period of 1971-2011 for the case of Iran as one of the top CO2 emitting countries in the world. The results of ARDL and Johansen cointegration approaches confirm the existence of long run relationship among CO2 emissions, energy consumption, GDP, f...
متن کاملIn-Plane and out of Plane Free Vibration of U-Shaped AFM Probes Based on the Nonlocal Elasticity
Atomic force microscope (AFM) has been developed at first for topography imaging; in addition, it is used for characterization of mechanical properties. Most researches have been primarily focused on rectangular single-beam probes to make vibration models simple. Recently, the U-shaped AFM probe is employed to determine sample elastic properties and has been developed to heat samples locally. I...

The present paper reviews the impact of the development situation of 3 groups of selected developing countries on environment over the period of 1990 – 2014 using by Environment Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis. For this, it uses economic, social, human and political development factors with the variables that are as follows: GDP, GDP2 and energy consumption as economic development indicato...
متن کاملTesting quantitative models of backward masking.
We analyzed the relationship between U-shaped and monotonic-shaped masking functions, using both computer simulations of quantitative models and experimental data Our analysis revealed that quantitative models of backward masking predict that U-shaped masking functions should appear for weak masks and monotonic masking functions should appear for strong masks. The models predict, moreover, that...
